We are expecting triplets in May and would like to know how we can obtain home help for caring for our babies. We understand that there is no Free State help but would like to know how to go about getting help from nursing students or qualified nursery nurses, home helpers etc.

Thank you for your question. My suggestion would be to contact Social Services in your area in the first instance and ask for an appointment with a Social Worker to discuss your options because help is sometimes available but it will depend on your circumstances and the area you live in. If they are able to offer help they will carry out a financial assessment and you may have to pay something towards the cost.
If there is a College in your area that runs training courses for Nannies it would be worth contacting them because they are often looking for placements for their trainees and if you have a qualification such as a teacher, nurse or are trained in assessing younger staff where you work, you might be able to access free help provided you can fill in their portfolio.
There will also be agencies in your area who can arrange Maternity Nurses, Nannies and Home Helps for families. They will charge a finders fee
There are many private individuals who help parents with babies e.g. Doula’s who are sometimes Midwives and offer help in the first year following delivery. You will have to negotiate over fees.
Contact Tamba – The twins & Multiple Births Association www.tamba.org.uk who will be able to give you more suggestions and help. Good Luck!
