I am worried about my baby’s bottom, I think its nappy rash, and want to know what to do?

A Nappy rash is very common but can be treated successfully. The skin may look red and sore but if you act quickly at this stage you can calm the irritation and prevent infection. The irritation is caused by the contact of the chemicals in the urine and faeces on the baby’s delicate skin. Keep the area clean by cleaning it well every time you change the nappy with a mild unscented soap e.g. simple soap and water. Use a separate sponge or cloth for washing the nappy area. Do not use wipes unless you are away form home and it is not possible to access washing facilities. Baby wipes are sometimes too harsh for a babies skin especially if it is red and sore. Apply a barrier ointment to the skin, which will form a long lasting protective waterproof barrier to the skin. There are many good products on the market; my favourites are Vaseline, Bepanthen and Sudo-cream. Nappy rash usually clears up quickly with care but it is advisable to see your Health Visitor if the rash is spreading outside the nappy area, it contains spots that keep spreading outwards or the skin is broken and weeping because this might be an infection that requires special cream. It is advisable to consult your Doctor if your baby is feverish or unwell or the nappy rash is not responding to treatment within four to five days.
