My 2 year old daughter has been attacking other children, usually babies, over the last three months. She appears very sweet and playful at toddler groups but all of a sudden she can turn and pin them down and start scratching at their faces. There is usually no lead up to this i.e no sharing or snatching problems. I do follow her around at toddlers so's to reduce any sudden conflicts. She doesn't understand the naughty step. She knows when she has been naughty as I'm very firm with her.
Her nails are now always short as she did draw blood on several of the children.

A This is a common issue amongst toddlers so not to worry too much.

You are right to be firm with your daughter, you could also try to:

  1. Say no repeatedly and keep your voice low and determined
  2. Take her away from the situation when she attacks someone,
  3. Make a big fuss of the victim
  4. Encourage playing with dolls and ‘playing nicely’
  5. Encourage your daughter to say sorry.
