My son is now over 1 year old and drinking full fat cows milk.I want to try and wean him off the bottle, and onto a cup, but he won't drink from it at all, even though he knows what is in it. The last time i tried he was suffering from a particularly nasty Viral Infection and was off his milk anyway, but would drink a bit from a bottle if offered it. so we gave in and put him back on the bottle. should we persevere with keeping him off the bottle or should we wait until he is ready?

A You are right to persevere with the use of a cup as 1 year is the recommended age for weaning off the bottle. However, as your son has been unwell it is probably not a great time to take his bottle away. You could try to introduce a cup again in a weeks time, trying first at breakfast then gradually introduce it through the day with the bedtime feed being the last one to change.

With a new baby on the way, it would definitely be a good idea to have your son confident with a cup before the birth of the new baby.

Try a simple non-valved feeder cup, you will have to hold it initially until your son gets used to it and prepare yourself for some spillages!
