My eighteen month old has started holding his breath. He cried so much today that he turned blue and passed out. Could this be serious? .
A Anger and frustrated strong willed toddlers can bring on breath holding attacks They start to cry for whatever reason and do not stop, then become hysterical causing hyperventilation and finally stop breathing. The lips turn blue and they pass out. However they recover very quickly and are soon breathing normally. There is no brain damage because it lasts less than a minute. No treatment is necessary but it is possible to prevent them.
