I think my daughter may be overweight - How can I keep my child's weight right? .

A

If you think your young daughter is overweight, check this out with your local Health Visitor before any action is taken, it may be that you child is actually within the normal limits. If she does not need to diet aim to keep her weight the same as she grows taller. Don’t forget, your child is still growing and so she needs energy for growth however, it is essential that she receives this energy from nutritious, healthy food, and not from foods filled with saturated fat and sugar. Coax her to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Healthy eating also means intakes of lean proteins such as meat and fish, eggs, beans, pulses and lentils.

You will probably be aware to try to cut down on saturated fat, sugary foods and drinks, and salt. If your daughter gets hungry between meals, offer her an attractive healthy snack such as colorful fruit or a glass of milk. Try and keep sugary snacks like biscuits, chocolate and cakes to a minimum.

As well as eating healthily, make sure she is getting enough regular exercise. The Department of Health UK recommends that children should be getting between 30-60mins of physical activity every day (although this does not need to be done all in one block). Family activities like bike rides and going to the local parks can make exercise more enjoyable.
