Are there any foods my son shouldn't be given?.

A

  • Salt - is not easily processed by immature kidneys and too much salt is dangerous to a small child. We suggest leave salt out of home-cooked meals and avoid giving him salty foods like bacon.
  • Sugar – too much sugar can encourage a sweet tooth and cause dental decay. High sugar foods are also highly calorific and can lead to obesity.
  • Honey – causes the same problems as sugar. Should be avoided where possible.
  • Nuts - Whole or chopped nuts should not be given whole to children under five years old because of the risk of choking. It's a good idea to crush or flake them instead but only if there is no history of food or other allergies in your family.
  • Certain types of fish - Shark, swordfish and marlin should be avoided because they contain relatively high levels of mercury, which might affect a child's developing nervous system
  • Raw shellfish – should be avoided due to the risk of food poisoning.
  • Raw and lightly-cooked eggs – Ensure that eggs are cooked until the yolk and white are solid. Raw eggs and food that contains raw or partially cooked eggs can cause the risk of salmonella, the main cause of food poisoning.
