Can my baby get diseases from my pet?.

A Yes your baby can get diseases from your pets - diseases that can be passed from animals to humans are called zoonoses.

  • Cats and dogs commonly have roundworms and these can infect humans, particularly children. Infection usually occurs orally by contact with the roundworm eggs from the coats of dogs and cats or from the soil. Children are commonly affected as they often put their hands in their mouths. So the best measure is to always keep your cat and dog wormed, clean your pet’s food dishes after food and wash separately from your own. Most importantly, always wash your Childs hands regularly and especially after contact with your cat, dog or garden soil.
  • Ringworm too can be passed on to humans. It is a fungal infection and it can be passed on to humans from cats and dogs fur. Good pet care then too is important. Keep your pet groomed and seen by the vet if they have skin problems. It goes without saying vigilant hand washing is essential if you have pets.
  • Salmonella are bacteria found in the gut of many animals, including reptiles, snakes and turtles. These bacteria can cause your child to become seriously ill. As a result children should not be allowed to touch these pets because of the risk of them getting salmonella. Also if you have a pet reptile, snake or turtle you must wear disposable gloves or wash your hands thoroughly after touching your reptile.
