How can I prevent cot death?.

A

  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep, do this for both day and night sleeps. However, you may notice your babies head may become flattened over time; you can diminish this by encouraging them to lay on their front or side when they are awake during the day when you are supervising them.
  • Buy a cot for your baby and have it in the same room as you for the first 6 months. Do not share a bed with your baby as you may accidentally roll over and suffocate your baby or they could fall out of bed. This is especially the case if you have been drinking alcohol or if you take drugs as this will make you more tired and less responsive.
  • Never fall to sleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair, try to put them in their cot first.
  • Do not let your baby get too hot, buy a baby thermometer so you can check the temperature of the room.
  • Use cot sheets and blankets so that you can add and remove layers.
  • Tuck your baby in firmly after placing your baby’s feet at the bottom of the cot. This is so they can not wriggle under the covers
  • Don’t use quilts, duvets, pillows and cot bumpers as they can cause overheating and suffocation
  • Make sure your keep your baby’s head uncovered as this is how babies keep their temperature regulated, through their heads.
  • Try not to let anyone smoke in the same room as your baby
