Are there any hints you can give me to get my child to co-operate with me?.

A Getting your child to co-operate with you really depends on a few things. First you need to take into consideration their age and the stages of their development.

For example a two year old has not developed the concentration and reasoning yet to undertake tasks. They also are at the stage in their development when they want to exert power and control over their lives so getting them to co-operate will need creative thinking.

You may find that most children will need to be encouraged to co-operate with you by using play. Getting a two year old to let you undertake basic tasks like putting their nappy or clothes on just needs a bit of imagination to make the task fun.

Bearing in mind your Childs need to exert their power and control you may also find it helpful to consider how to phrase the tasks that you want your child to complete, all aiming at empowering your child.

For example:

“Put your boots on to go outside”

This is really a command that may cause you toddler to ignore you completely!

Where as:

“As soon as you have your boots on I know you will be ready to play outside”

May have a better response as it gives the child a choice and is fun!

You can even encourage cooperation in older children with fun games. Turning household tasks into games that you complete together.
