Most of us love our parents but we may not particularly respect
them.
The best way to start is to think about the things that you
respect in your parents and others. Maybe think about the things that they did
that made you value and look up to them and bring these things to your parenting.
Some of the things you value may be the following:
1. Communicate with your child on their level, involve them
in making choices and be fair.
2. Play with your children and make time for them, show them
you enjoy being with them.
3. Do discipline your child and set boundaries what ever their
age - they need to learn right from wrong at an early age.
4. Be consistent with your child’s discipline and rewarding.
5. Praise and reward positive behaviours rather than the negative
6. Don’t scream and shout or physically punish your child
7. Be a good role model
8. Be loving and affectionate with your child at all times even during negative
behaviour your love needs to be experienced.
9. Be available and accessible to your child
10. Be thoughtful and considerate.
However you may have your own additions to bring to your parenting.
Remember that respect has to be earned so it will not happen over night. None
of us are taught to be parents but recognising these values will give you a
good start.
