My child has started biting me and others how do I stop it?.

A The most important thing to do is find out the cause of Biting.

It may be:

  • Your child could be teething and biting may give them relief.
  • They may be at a stage in their development that causes them to be unable to communicate their needs and wants. Frustration may cause them to experience built up aggression.
  • Some children bite because it brings them attention. Any attention to a child in this position, even negative attention is better than no attention at all.

To stop the biting habit, you would need to apply a discipline to your child immediately and every time they bite - do the same thing each time. Consistency is the key.

  • Verbally tell them ‘no biting’ in a firm, meaningful voice but do not shout!
  • If they do not stop biting, remove your child from the room to distract their attention
  • Do explain to your child why this biting behaviour is unacceptable

Use your normal disciplining techniques that may involve:

  • Creating ‘time out’ or creating a naughty corner. Your child will have to stay in this place away from all the excitement until they choose to change their behaviour and it is acceptable to you.
  • You may also want to teach your child by with holding privileges and treats. These can be returned when your Childs behaviour improves.
  • Don’t be tempted to bite your child back, this can injure your child and just reinforces that mummy or daddy bite too!
