I've heard reward charts help improve a Childs behaviour - what are they and what do I do?.

A Reward charts are also known as sticker or star charts. These charts are used to show a Childs progress towards positive goals and achievements in their behaviour. The reward given for the progress is either a sticker of their choice/star on the chart. However you may also want to add positive rewards on successful completion of tasks either on a daily or weekly basis. For example if your child has been good all day they can have a trip to the park.

Reward charts are great for a number of reasons. They are inexpensive to create and you can apply the behaviours you want to tackle with your child. The rewards you chose should not be expensive but things your child enjoys to do. Your child can be involved in the creation, choosing the stickers and placing the stickers on the chart. This fosters independence and control. It enables you to focus on the positive behaviours your child does, rather than the negative

The charts can be adapted to meet the needs of younger children who have a limited concentration span so you can reward on a daily basis or it can be adapted to meet the needs of older children so you can reward on a weekly basis

Topics to use for your reward chart:

  • Getting dressed by themselves.
  • Tidying away toys at the end of the day.
  • Finishing dinner.
  • Getting ready for bed when asked.
