How do I deal with tantrums?.
A
Temper tantrums are a normal
part of a Childs development. They are especially common around the age of 2 years.
Often this period is fondly termed “the terrible twos” These tantrums
are associated with language development. This is because toddlers usually understand
more of the spoken word than they themselves can speak. Therefore they experience
frustration when they are unable to communicate their needs and wants. You will
notice as your Childs language skills improve, their tantrums tend to decrease.
The best way to deal with temper tantrums is to try to avoid
them occurring in the first place if possible. Here are some strategies that
may help:
- Set firm and consistent
guidelines for what behaviour is acceptable and what is not.
- Spend quality one to
one time with your child. Positive attention may prevent the onset of tantrums.
- Try to give your child
control and choices about the small things in their lives. This will help
them to feel independent and prevent tantrums. For example food and clothing
selection.
- If a tantrum does erupt,
use distraction techniques to either change the location or object that is
the cause of the tantrum.
- Check that their toys
are age appropriate and they are not getting frustrated as the task is too
hard or easy for them.
- Know your Childs limits
and needs. For example, it may not be a good idea to go shopping when you
child is tired; the end result may be public tantrum displays
