How do I deal with a restless excitable child?.
A
Being restless and excitable
is usually just a part of being a child. However if your child is so active and
noisy that it makes life difficult, your child may be overactive or have attention-deficit
hyperactivity disorder or hyperkinetic disorder (hyperactivity),
An overactive child is usually noisy, demanding, and excitable
and chatters away constantly. You may also notice they find it difficult to
sit still and they are reluctant to respond to your requests. If you suspect
your child may have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or hyperkinetic
disorder (hyperactivity). - Do see your GP
The following may help: when dealing with a restless excitable
child:
- Try to find out why
your child is behaving this way - then you will be able to help them more
effectively.
- Children do get bored
easily and it is important as a parent to spend time with your child. Often
being naughty or noisy is the only way a child can communicate their boredom
and get attention from their mum or dad.
- It is important to have
clear rules and set boundaries so children can learn self control. Make sure
as parents you are both consistent and follow-through on your guidelines.
- Your child might just
be more outgoing and excitable than other children – it may be the normal
for them – if this is the case you will need to adapt and be flexible.
- Your child could have
a hearing problem such as glue ear that makes it difficult for them to hear
you and causes them to shout. See your GP if you suspect this.
- Some children get livelier
with certain types of food. If you suspect this is the case, keep a food diary
and then chat with your GP or Health Visitor for advice.
- Spend time with your
child on their own, so that they know you are interested in them and take
every opportunity to praise your child whenever possible.
