How do I discipline my child?.

A The ultimate goal of disciplining children is to set boundaries and teach them which behaviours are acceptable. The end result is that it is hoped they will come to the point where they will monitor their own behaviour and make sound choices.

If this is applied in a positive and consistent manner your child will be able to see what appropriate behaviour is and what inappropriate behaviour is. Choosing a variety of positive options will enable your child to realise that they have acted inappropriately so they can chose to do things differently in the future

Some things to try:

1. Let your child see what will happen if they do not behave and explain to them the consequences of their actions. For example if they throw and break their toys they will learn that they will not be able to have fun and play with a damaged toy.

2. You may also want to teach your child by withholding privileges and treats. These can be returned when your Childs behaviour improves.

3. You may also want to try getting them to behave by enforcing a short period of time out - or by creating a naughty corner. Your child will have to stay in this place away from all the excitement until they display acceptable behaviour.

4. Be firm but calm with your child, try not to get angry, if you do feel angry, it is best to walk away from your child for a short period until you feel more settled.

5. Never smack your child
