What is the treatment for colic?.

A Every baby is different so you may find that your baby will respond to some suggestions but not all. It is always best then to try different methods. I have outlined a number of suggestions that some Mums have found work well for them, but you may have your own to try. Also take a look at our other FAQs related to colic..

  • Try to prevent your baby from swallowing air by positioning them upright on your lap during feeding.
  • Try to wind your baby regularly during feeding and following each feed.
  • If you are breastfeeding, cut down or avoid drinking too much tea, coffee, and other drinks that contain caffeine. Some women also find that spicy food some vegetables and alcohol can aggravate their babies colic.
  • Think about using fast flow teats these are teats with larger or more holes they help stop air entering whilst feeding – but check that the flow is not fast or too challenging for baby to swallow.
  • Try anti colic bottles, they don’t help every baby but they may work for your baby.
  • Some babies respond well to movement and can settle a baby. Try walking around with baby over your shoulder, pushing them in their pram or take them round the block in the car as the motion can help settle them.
  • Sometimes a very gentle tummy or back massage can help settle your baby. This should only be done several hours after feeding, after food has had time to digest.
  • Some mums find a gentle, warm bath may help to relax and settle their baby
  • If you have tried everything and you are finding it difficult to cope, speak to your GP or health visitor who can help you.
