My baby is bottle feeding how do I prevent colic?.

A

  • You can prevent colic by firstly thinking about the position you feed your baby in. Often you can prevent your baby from swallowing too much air by sitting them upright to feed.
  • Remember to stop occasionally to wind your baby during the feeding process - this may stop a build up of wind and discomfort.
  • Take a look at the teats you are using. If the holes in the bottle teats are too small it may cause your baby to swallow air along with their feed. Chose fast-flow teats with larger or several holes – but always test the flow to make sure your baby is not struggling too much with too fast a milk flow, or loosing milk from too much dribbling.
  • You may want to try anti-colic bottles. They do not work for all babies and they are more expensive, but some parents have had good results with them
  • Positioning your baby in an upright position for an hour or so after feeding may also help prevent the build up of wind.
  • If your baby has difficulty getting their wind up sometimes a very gentle back or tummy massage helps. If you are giving gentle massage, this is not advisable directly after a feed – wait a couple of hours.
  • Some movement helps like gently rocking your baby whilst on your lap or across your knee. You may wish to consider walking around with them over your shoulder – this may help them get up wind.
