How do I know my baby has colic?.
A
Symptoms of colic usually appear
out of the blue. Your baby has been feeding well, gaining weight and has not shown
any other symptoms of ill health.
However your baby may experience the following:
- The most prominent symptom
is crying. The crying can vary in intensity from brief periods of restlessness
to intense periods when your baby appears to be inconsolable whatever you
try to do!
- This crying may last
for several hours a day and although it does not harm your baby it can be
exhausting for you as a parent.
- The crying usually gets
worse in the afternoon or evening
- Feeding patterns may
be disrupted due to the crying
- Sleep patterns can be
affected
- You may notice your baby
appears to look uncomfortable; your baby may clench their fists or draw their
legs up to their chest. They can screw up their faces and looked flushed.
- You may notice they pass
a lot of wind
The important thing to remember
is that having colic will not harm your baby and it is very common. The main
concern is the stress and anxiety the crying can cause for you as a parent.
It can be difficult to cope with the constant crying. Make sure you have support
and take a break from your baby during the periods of crying. Always contact
your health visitor or GP if you have any concerns about your baby
