How do I comfort my crying baby?.

A There are lots of things you can try to comfort your baby. However, the most important thing is to try and recognize what you baby wants (see question: why do babies cry). Babies cry as a way of communicating with you.

Some hints and tips to help settle your baby are:

  • Some babies like to feel close to you and hear your voice, smell your body, and hear your heart beat. Some mums like to use a baby sling so they can keep their babies close but are still able to do the odd chore.
  • Some mums sing or talk softly to their babies or play familiar music
  • Change nappy or feed if appropriate
  • You may wish to consider using a dummy to help console your baby. In newborns the sucking reflex is very strong. It not only enables them to get milk but it also serves as a source of comfort for your baby
  • Some babies like motion or movement or to be rocked in their crib or pram and some parents take their baby for a run in the car which can help to settle them.
  • Massage - gentle stroking and massage of all kinds can help calm your baby, but don't massage his tummy before he's four weeks old, miss out his spine and avoid nut-based oils such as almond oil
