Why do babies cry?.

A As babies can not talk yet crying is the most effective way they have of telling you their needs. It’s a way of communicating as they can not do anything for themselves yet. So as you can imagine babies do spend a lot of their day crying. As a new parent this can be quite upsetting especially as you are unsure what their cries mean. Some babies do have different types of cries and as you spend more time together with your baby you may get to tell the difference between cries and decipher what they mean.

Babies will cry:

  • Babies cry to tell you their hungry, especially at first as you are trying to settle them into a feeding pattern
  • Hand in hand with feeding comes the need for nappy changes. None of us like to be sat in a wet nappy, so some babies will tell you when they get uncomfortable.
  • Babies also communicate other basic needs, like if they are too hot or cold or if their clothing is too tight.
  • They also like to feed that they are safe and loved and sometimes just cry to be close to you and cuddled
  • Babies also cry when they are in pain have discomfort or if they are ill. This is an important cry to remember. Often when a baby is ill the cry will have a different almost high pitched tone. If you feel you baby may be ill always see your GP so they can examine your baby.
