How do I cope with my 2 year old twin's toddler tantrums?.
A
The terrible two’s is
a childhood stage that seems to put fear into every parent! However with twins
the terrible two’s can be double the trouble! As with a single child, temper
tantrums and screaming are the norms within this stage of their development.
This is because within this age range your twins are starting
to develop their own individual personalities and test the boundaries to try
and gain control. However as their speech has not fully developed, frustration
can arise due to the fact that they are unable to express what they feel, so
the best way of getting attention is by throwing a tantrum.
The trick with tantrums is to assess what caused the tantrums
and find solutions. For example: are they tired, hungry, bored, or over-stimulated?
Do remember with twins there is something called twin escalation
syndrome (TES). This is where when one twin does something the other will follow
suit as he/she just wants to do what his twin sibling is doing. With tantrums
this can be exhausting. These tips may help:
- Try to have help and
support
- Avoid situations that
you know may cause tantrums
- Use distraction when
the tantrum is in full force
- Separate your twins
to stop the twin escalation syndrome until calm is restored
- Use prevention by keeping
them occupied, fed and rested to prevent hunger boredom and over stimulation
- Try not to loose control
- Although difficult,
try not to scream and shout
- Do think about getting
tips from other parents of twins
- Do speak to health visitor
about playgroups and nursery places
