As with any new baby the financial
responsibility can be worrying. However, not knowing exactly your financial circumstances
consider our general advice:
Like all parents you will be entitled to Child Benefit. In addition
depending on your income you may be entitled to Child Tax Credit and Working
Tax Credit, which can also help with the costs of childcare. Your health visitor
and midwife will be able to advise you of where to get the application forms
from. You can also access the information online at:

There is also a Sure Start
Maternity Grant which you may be eligible to claim. This is £500 and this
Maternity Grant is payable per baby. The time frame to claim this grant is tight,
within 3 months of the baby’s birth.

It might be worth speaking
to your employer of any benefits that they offer in the way of child care. For
more information you can also contact the Inland Revenue to check and see what
you may be entitled to

If you are trying for a
baby and there is a strong family history of twins you may wish o consider taking
out a twin’s insurance policy that may help financially if you do give
birth to more than one baby. More information can be obtained from your citizen’s
advice bureau or insurance company.
