What side effects should I expect to see after my baby has her injections?.

A Your baby’s reaction to an immunization varies depending on which vaccine or vaccines have been given.

Possible side affects the DTaP/IPV/Hib (Diphtheria + Tetanus + Pertussis + Polio + Hib) pnemococcal (pneumonia) and MMR (Measles + Mumps + Rubella) vaccines can be the symptoms listed below. Most symptoms if they do occur are seen in the first 24 hours after the vaccine has been given.

  • a slightly raised temperature
  • irritability
  • with MMR possibility of a rash
  • swollen glands
  • some sickness and / or diarrhoea
  • Your baby could get a small hard lump at the site of the injection, which may last for a few weeks
  • Your baby may be restless, of low mood or irritable within 48 hours of having the injection.
  • Sometimes there is swelling and redness at the site of the injection.

Men c (meningitis C)

  • redness and swelling at the site of the injection
  • mild fevers
  • irritability
  • Headaches.
  • Dizziness
  • nausea and vomiting

As with all vaccines there is a rare possibility of the Men C causing Anaphylaxis. This is a serious allergic reaction that quickly manifests following exposure to the vaccine. This is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis may include:

  • wheezing, shortness of breath, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, itchy mouth/throat, nasal stuffiness/congestion
  • pale/blue colour, low pulse, dizziness, light-headedness/passing out, low blood pressure, shock, loss of consciousness
  • Rash or hives, swelling, itch, warmth, redness
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
  • itchy/red/watery eyes, headache
