What is Post Natal Psychosis?.

A Post natal psychosis or (puerperal) psychosis is a very severe form of depression that can occur within a few days or even a few weeks after childbirth.

The causes of post natal psychosis are unknown but as with post natal depression there is a suggestion that there may be a link between the drop in hormone levels in the woman’s body after they have given birth and post natal psychosis.

The symptoms can be schizophrenic in nature in that the woman may experience rapid mood swings, delusions or false beliefs and paranoia. Sometimes the woman experiencing post natal psychosis may hear voices and may be incredibly anxious and panicky.

Post natal psychosis can become very dangerous especially if the woman has suicidal thoughts and makes threats to end her own life. Sometimes the irrational behaviour may result in threatening to kill family members of her baby. Therefore, a woman with post natal psychosis is in mental health crisis and this will require urgent in depth support from the mental health team.

Although incredibly worrying for the family during this time post natal psychosis is very treatable. However, the woman will need to be admitted to hospital with their baby for treatment.

If you feel you may have symptoms or know someone you are concerned about speak to your health visitor, GP, midwife or other social care and mental health service practitioners for help and advice.
