Can I take herbal medicines to help with Post Natal Depression (PND)?.

A The most widely used herbal medication to help with depression is St John's Wort (hypericum). Many studies have been undertaken looking at this medications usefulness, the most recent being a systematic review and meta-analysis. This currently provides the best evidence of the effects of St. John’s wort in people with mild to moderate major depression and moderate to severe/ major depression. The study was reviewed on the NHS choices website and their conclusions are that:

“…..the evidence suggests that St. John’s wort is a viable treatment for mild to moderate major depression”

It must be recognized that this conclusion is based on the particular strength and make of St Johns Wort used in the study. Many over the counter preparations of St Johns Wort do vary considerably, so if you would like to take St Johns wort speak to your GP for their advice on what strengths and type to chose. Remember too you can access the study to read on the NHS choices website

Another reason for seeking the advice of you GP regarding using St Johns Wort as an anti depressant medication is that it can interact with other medications you may be taking. This can cause potentially serious side effects or even stop your medication working. It should also not be taken if you are breast feeding as not enough research has been done on the affects this may have on your baby. The advice of you GP then can not be recommended enough before deciding to take this herbal drug.
