How is Post Natal Depression (PND) diagnosed?.

A As part of your child health schedule your health visitor is not just concerned about the health and welfare of your baby, but your health and wellbeing too.

So as part of the scheduled visits they will ask you to complete with them a questionnaire. This questionnaire is known as the Edinburgh postnatal depression score and it enables health visitors to identify whether you have symptoms of post natal depression. (For the symptoms of post natal depression please see the others questions in our FAQ section)

The questionnaire is really useful if you answer the questions as truthfully as you can. Many mums are concerned that if they answer how they really feel they will be thought of as a bad parent. However, this is not the case at all, recognizing that you have a problem and getting help is positive and will help prevent any negative affects the depression could have with bonding with your baby and on the rest of your family.

Depending on your score from the questionnaire and the protocol of the specific Primary Care Trust uses in your area. You may need to see your GP. Your GP can then rule out any medical reasons for your symptoms and confirm your diagnosis, before any treatments are suggested.
