How can I stop myself from getting post natal depression?.

A Here are some things that may help prevent the onset of post natal depression.

  • Prepare for the arrival of your baby, go to antenatal classes, ask you’re your partner also to learn as much as you can about what having a baby in your life will be like
  • Acknowledge that the arrival of a new baby will cause massive changes to your life and discuss these changes with family and friends.
  • Acknowledge that if there are massive change events such as separation, divorce, moving house or getting married also going on in your life as well as having a baby, this may put you at risk. So try not to do everything all at once.
  • Surround yourself or make friends with other women who are pregnant or who have young babies. It is important to have support networks, especially if your close family do not live nearby or live abroad
  • Don’t try and do too much, make sure you look after yourself, eat well and have time away from your baby. Make sure you get plenty of rest and sleep.
  • Get help from your partner and involve them in care for your baby, also take time to enjoy life as a couple.
  • Do talk to people and share your feelings.
  • Do get help with all the practical things, such as shopping.
  • Get to know your health visitor before your baby is born by attending any pre-natal groups they offer. Remember that your health visitor and GP are there to help and support you.
