How is Post natal depression (PND) treated?.
A
The treatment of PND really
depends on a number of factors, but most importantly should be the treatment that
you feel is right for you.
Your doctor will usually make a decision on the treatment you
need depending on the severity of your depression and the impact that has on
your daily life an example of this may be - can you look after your baby and
other children in your family?
Often a number of treatments may be considered to work alongside
each other to get the best results.
You’re GP and health visitor will also look at the whole
situation and other influences that may be contributing to your depression.
These can be things like relationship problems, financial problems and social
isolation. Your treatment regimen might involve social support.
For example you might get:
- Advice re: debt and money
issues
- Support from relationship
counsellors
Other treatments include
- Support visits form your
health visitor to talk things through about the issues concerning you
- Opportunity to talk through
issues with other trained counsellors
- Links to support or self-help
groups, where you can meet other sufferers and learn form them
- Antidepressants, however
often these do not work until they have been taken for about 4 weeks so they
are usually given along with another treatment
- Psychological treatments
such as cognitive behavioural therapy, which is a strategy of removing unhelpful
thoughts and behaviours
- Exercise programmes as
exercise enhances mood
