What are baby blues?.

A According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists the baby blues are much more common that you would imagine. According to them, 80% of mothers go through the baby blues.

The baby blues are changes in mood that usually occur 3 or 4 days after your baby’s birth and can be a quite stark change from the elation you felt when your baby was born.

The symptoms can be that your feel worried or anxious about things that usually would not bother you, you may feel a bit low and keep bursting into tears or feel emotional for no apparent reason.

The baby blues is considered to be caused by a number of factors. It may be one or a number of these factors. The baby blues are usually associated with anything that brings you down to reality after the ecstasy and happiness you felt after birth. Sometimes it all accumulates into one big anti climax.

Factors contributing to baby blues can be:

  • Tiredness
  • Feeling sore form stitches or from breast feeding
  • Hormone changes after birth as the body gets back to its pre-pregnancy state
  • All the visitors dropping in - can be exhausting

Make sure you get others to help you during this time, cry if you want to and make time for yourself. If your feelings don’t go away or you are concerned speak to your health visitor or GP.
