Should I worry about the way my child walks?.

A Any concern that you have about your child should be checked up by your doctor. You are the expert, and as a parent you see your child everyday and can recognize when something is untoward.

The most common problem noticed by parents are In-toeing and out-toeing

  • In-toeing means that the feet point inward instead of pointing straight ahead when walking or running. It is also known as being “pigeon toed”
  • Out-toeing means that the feet point outward instead of pointing straight.

In-toeing and out-toeing develops usually through torsion or tilting of the Tibia bone which is one of the bones in the bottom of the leg can cause both in-toeing and out-toeing depending on the way the bone tilts. Femur torsion of tilting can also occur to cause in-toeing and out-toeing. The femur is the thigh bone.

Both in-toeing and out-toeing are familiar, which means passed on through the genes, so if Mum or Dad in-toed or out-toed, your child is more likely to have the same presentation.

Both conditions depending on the severity and diagnosis usually do not require any treatment. This is because, most of the time the position of the feet gradually rectifies itself as your toddler gets older bones grow and their co-ordination improves.
