How do I Encourage learning and play with my 8-12 month year old?.

A Within this developmental stage your child is forming a strong bond with you or attachment. You may notice within this age range your child starts to cry when they are separated from you, which can be difficult if you are thinking of going back to work. Try to make them feel safe and secure during this time and explain to them the separation is not permanent.

Your Childs mobility and co-ordination has also developed rapidly, all of a sudden they seem to be into everything. They can crawl and stand now so a full range of motion to explore their environments.

Your babies language is developing rapidly now although they understand more than they can say at this stage.

To encourage play and learning at this stage you may wish to:

  • Continue to talk to your baby and try to get them to respond by imitating you. Give names and point to objects and read plenty of books together again naming the objects.
  • Provide a safe place for them to explore this is because they are more mobile. You want to encourage their curiosity, but safely so think about child proofing as much as you can.
  • As your childs hand eye co-ordination is improving they will love to explore objects and toys in more detail, so give them lots of different textures to explore and bricks to stack.
