Why is my baby suddenly waking at night?.

A Babies’ can suddenly start waking at night for many reasons. Sometimes this can be a change in daytime routine. For example you may have been on holiday. It could also be due to them being ill or teething.

Other things to think about are changes to your Childs environment, so check the common sense things first for example:

  • Is their room too warm or too cold?
  • Do they have too many or not enough bed clothes on?
  • Have they had a bad dream?
  • Maybe the lighter nights are waking them up?

However, babies do have changes in their growth and development that can affect their sleep. All children have growth spurts, and this may result in them being hungry. Also depending on their stage in development, there may be some change that coincides with their waking up. Your health visitor will be able to help and advise you with what to expect at your Childs age range with growth and development milestones, or check the information in your child health record. (You can also see our FAQ’s section on growth and development)

The best solution is to find out the reason they are waking, rectify the problem and then stick to what worked for you before your child started waking. Consistency is essential with children so don’t let the sudden waking break your resolve. If you are consistent and stick to your Childs sleep routine they will start sleeping through the night again
