Can I bring my baby into my bed?.

A Lots of parents feel that this is the best thing to do as babies do respond well to the closeness of their mother especially breastfeeding mothers. Indeed, UNICEF and the FSID who have done research into sudden infant death syndrome recommends that you should at least put your baby in your room with you in their cot for the first 6 months. Some babies do actually respond better when they have their own space, but are still close to you. Nonetheless, it is up to you to decide whether you wish to sleep with your baby.

Due to the concern about sudden infant deaths UNICEF and FSID also recommend that you never share your bed with your baby if you or your partner smokes or if you have taken drugs or alcohol. Remember if you are very tired, or ill don’t sleep with your baby as your response to wake may be limited and you may roll onto your baby in your sleep.

If you do decide to sleep with your baby here are a few safety tips:

  • Put your baby to sleep on his back
  • Position them safely so they can not fall out of bed or get stuck between the bed and the wall
  • Do not give your baby a pillow or have the sheets or duvet covering their heads as they may suffocate.
  • Don’t overdress your baby remember your body heat will keep your baby warm
