How to I get my baby to move into and sleep in their own room?.

A A good start will be to try to get her used to her bedroom and her cot. Up until now she has associated this space as a place where she is without you. So take her into her room throughout the day and make this environment fun, play with her firstly in her bedroom then her cot, so she associates this room and her bed with nice things rather than a place she finds herself when you are not there.

You might even want to involve your child in re-decorating their room or placing things around the room that they like.

When she feels more comfortable with this environment, try and get a routine going where her naps in the day are taken in her cot, in her bedroom. If you have a spare bed in the room you could even nap beside her, to help her feel more settled (plus you get a few minutes rest!).

When she needs to sleep – always try to put her in her cot, in her room – even if she drops off after a feed, try to wake her. All these routines are set so she associates these actions with sleep and that sleep is taken in her own room.

If you are breastfeeding your baby, consider putting a cot sheet close to your body for a few hours – you could tuck it under your bra - Then when your baby goes to sleep in her cost, give her the ‘mummy smelling cot sheet’ she can smell you around her, which may make her feel more secure.
