How can I get my baby into a sleeping routine?.

A Babies like consistency and set patterns it helps them to feel safe. So even if your baby is as young as six or eight weeks old, you can start to follow a set pattern every night, to help your baby settle down into a sleeping routine

The best routine to chose is one that suits you; you are more likely to stick with a routine that fits in with your family and what you and you baby enjoy. Here are some suggestions that might help you think about the routine you want to set up with your baby:

  • Try to start your routine at the same time every evening.
  • Try to start with winding down parts of the routine to help your baby relax.
  • Babies are more likely to sleep if they are not over stimulated.
  • Bathing your baby, followed by a soothing massage might helps them to relax
  • You may just want to wash your baby, change their nappy and put on nightclothes. Remember to keep the routine the same, your baby will soon associate the routine with sleep time.
  • Some mums like to read to their babies or play soft music whilst they are in their cot to help them relax
  • Some Mums like to read their baby a story or just chat to them
  • Try to put your baby in their cot when they are sleepy but still awake and encourage them to learn to fall asleep on their own
