What not to do when Potty Training?.
A
- Don’t start potty
training before your child is ready developmentally (see our how I know my
child is ready question in this section). If you start before your child is
ready you will set yourself up to fail.
- Don’t start potty
training during a time of stress for example new babies, moving house or holidays.
This can be stressful for your toddler. Wait until life settles down a bit
and then try again.
- Do not get angry with
your child however frustrated you are; try to remain calm, even if your toddler
has made a mess. Accidents will happen! If you feel you can not deal with
this issue at this present time leave potty training for a week or two and
go back to nappies.
- Don't treat accidents
like a big deal, just treat it as an everyday occurrence and do involve your
child in the cleaning up of any mess.
- Don’t encourage
your child to strain to hard on the toilet. Forcing a pooh can cause small
tears or piles. These can be painful and could cause your child to not want
to use the potty.
- Don't try to force your
child to sit on the potty. It can create negative associations with the potty.
- Don't set deadlines for
yourself and your child to be potty trained by. Each child is different and
potty train in their own time. Deadlines just lead to frustration and both
of you feeling inadequate!
