Please be reassured that this
is very common. Health professionals recommend that you start potty training children
at a round 2-3 years of age because children of this age have often progressed
enough developmentally. However, this age range is a guide. Children do vary as
to when they are ready to potty train and it really depends on your own child.
Sometimes when we have been trying to potty train for a long
time we can make the problem worse by becoming tense it then becomes a battle
of wills with your toddler adamantly refusing anything to do with the potty!
- Firstly talk to your
child to find out why they will not use the potty. It may be some fear you
can tackle before you proceed.
- Once the cause is established,
the best course of action is to completely forget about potty training for
a month or so, put your child back into nappies and forget all about potty
training. This will help you both become more relaxed.
- When you decide to recommence
potty training start from the beginning that is the very basics taking into
consideration the reasons for dislike of using the potty in the first place.
(see also the preparation for potty training question)
- Take your child to chose
and buy a new potty, or you both may decide to use the toilet and a trainer
seat
- Make potty training fun,
do not push your child or punish them if they have accidents always remain
calm.
