My son poohs in his nappy but won't do it on the potty..
A
Firstly by way of reassurance,
this is a very common ocurance. It may help you to understand the reasons why
some children won’t use a nappy for poohs.
- Sometimes the potty can
be uncomfortable to sit for long periods. You can buy covers for the potty
that are softer so will make the experience more comfortable
- To have a pooh can take
too long out of your busy toddlers schedule. Your toddler would rather be
playing, so think of how you can make it fun.
- The whole sitting to
pooh experience is not usual for toddlers - usually they are running around
when they pooh so this may be strange for them.
- They may have had a bad
experience, such as being splashed on the bottom with urine or water during
a pooh.
- Sometimes if they have
had a hard pooh that was painful for them it may make them reluctant to use
the potty
Once you understand your
childs reasons for not using the potty to pooh you can then start to find solutions.
Solutions may be as simple as reassurance, making potty time fun, or placing
toilet paper in the poty first to prevent splashback. If your child has hard
poohs you need to look at increasing their fluids. If this does not help seek
advice form your health visitor or GP.
