How do I know when my child is ready for potty training?.

A We suggest that some children may be ready for potty training at around 2 -3 years of age. This is because children of this age have progressed developmentally both physically and emotionally, to both recognize the need to wee and pooh and control both their bladder and rectal muscles. This age range however is a guide and it really depends on your Childs developmental stage

So when they reach this age some of the signs below may give you an indication of their readiness.

  • They may be staying dry for longer periods of time usually a few hours or so.
  • Recognizing and indicating to you that they are weeing or poohing in their nappy and asking to be changed or taking off their own nappy.
  • They can already pull their pants up and down.
  • They can follow simple instructions.
  • They can sit for a few minutes without becoming distracted or irritable.
  • They show interest and or a desire in keeping dry or clean, or wearing underwear and especially in what you or siblings are doing in the toilet.

Potty training should not be forced and only done when a child is ready developmentally. Remember to be patient and reward your Childs first steps to independence.
