How do I know how many bottle feeds and how much my baby should be having at each feed?.

A As with breastfed babies bottle fed babies are fed on demand. They do however tend to fall into a pattern of 3-4 hourly feeds so in a 24 hour period a newborn baby can have anything up to 6-8 feeds a day ,

As regards to how much your baby should be having each day we use a basic sum which will help you calculate how much your baby needs per day:

So up to the first 6 months of life your baby should need 2.5 ounces of formula for every pound of their body weight.

Firstly we take your babies weight as a guide. So for example say your son is 8lb, so we know that we would need to times 2.5 ounces of formula by your babies weight, which is 8lb to get how much they will need per day

The sum would be 2.5 x 8 = 20

The resulting figure (20) can then be divided by the number of feeds they are currently tolerating. So say for example your baby is having 5 feeds a day you then divide this figure by the ounces needed per day (20) and this will give you the number of ounces your baby should have at each feed.

20 divided by 5 = 4 ounces of formula at each feed.

Please note this is just a guideline and not to stick to it rigidly! Your baby will have growth spurts and times when they demand more feeds so just use your baby as your guide and increase their regimen accordingly.
