What can I do help relieve the symptoms of teething?.
A
It is important to remember
that teething will not make your baby ill, it is a natural part of their growth
and development and every child has to go through the process. Some children do
however have more discomfort than others and as every child is different you may
want to try a range of techniques until you find one or a few that helps to relieve
your Childs symptoms.
Some of the things you can try are:
- Clean teething rings
that have been placed in the fridge can help soothe, biting onto something
hard helps relive the pressure form the erupting teeth.
- Lots of cold drinks that
are sugar free such as water, this also helps replenish their fluids if they
have been drooling or dribbling a lot.
- Massaging your baby’s
gums with a clean finger, piece of gauze, cloth or soft toothbrush can help.
It will also get them used to dental hygiene.
- If your child is ready
developmentally, you can give them stick shaped vegetable pieces or fruit
to chew on, such as carrots and apples but always supervise your child to
prevent the risk of choking.
- Sugar free rusks, biscuits
or toast can help again supervision is required
- If your child is over
4 months old you may want to try sugar-free teething gels. Do speak first
to your pharmacist or health visitor /GP if the gel has been prescribed and
be sure to follow the dosage instructions.
- If your baby is in a
lot of discomfort you could also give them some sugar-free baby paracetamol
or ibuprofen BUT always do speak first to your pharmacist or health visitor
/GP if the medicine has been prescribed and be sure to follow the dosage instructions.
