How long does the teething process take?.

A The whole process of teething varies from child to child, but usually a child has a full set of first teeth or baby teeth by the time they are 3-4 years old. It is most common for the bottom front teeth to come through first from anything from 3 months to 6 months of age. Some children have been found to have been born with one or two teeth that already may be through the gum at birth. A baby Doctor will check that these early teeth are not loose, or risk being swallowed, but usually these teeth do not cause any problems. Other teeth will appear as is normal for the child’s age and development.

The appearance of the bottom teeth is usually followed by the appearance of the top front teeth. However, it does take a little longer for the first back teeth or molars to come through. The first molars appear at around 12- 14 months of age, followed by the canines at around 16-18 months of age, and finally the second molars at 18-30 months of age.

The process of teething can be quite a long process, as the teeth are formed and come through the gums intermittently. Some teeth can actually take months to come through.

The teething process can therefore, be quite painful for some babies whereas others may not appear to have any symptoms at all. For help and advice regarding the symptoms and treatment of teething please see the other questions in this section.
