How can I increase my milk supply?.

Breastfeeding can be difficult
for some Mums, but it may not be that you milk supply is low. Check that your
baby is gaining weight and producing at least 6 wet nappies a day and passing
at least 2 stools (poohs) per day. Contact your Health Visitor who will be more
than happy to give you the help and support you need whilst breastfeeding. In
the meantime these few hints may help you improve your milk supply.
- It may seem like common
sense but make sure your baby is latching on properly? Latching on is important
as to make more milk in the breasts you need to remove more milk, by your
baby feeding.
- Make sure you are feeding
for a long as your baby needs and let them come off the breast themselves.
Try to feed your baby more frequently and this may mean waking your baby if
they are sleepy.
- Offer both breasts at
each feed, but make sure your baby has emptied the first breast before you
offer the second breast
- Try to avoid offering
dummies and encourage your baby to suckle form the breast.
- Make sure you are eating
and drinking plenty and having a well balanced diet whilst you are feeding
your baby. Also try to rest and sleep well in between feeding your baby.
- It may also help for
you to express milk from your breasts either manually or by using a breast
pump, your health visitor will be able to advise you about this
