Check that your baby is gaining weight and producing at least 6 wet nappies a day and passing at least 2 stools (poohs) per day. Contact your Health Visitor who will be more than happy to give you the help and support you need whilst breastfeeding. In the meantime these few hints may help you improve your milk supply.

  • It may seem like common sense but make sure your baby is latching on properly? Latching on is important as to make more milk in the breasts you need to remove more milk, by your baby feeding.
  • Make sure you are feeding for a long as your baby needs and let them come off the breast themselves. Try to feed your baby more frequently and this may mean waking your baby if they are sleepy.
  • Offer both breasts at each feed, but make sure your baby has emptied the first breast before you offer the second breast
  • Try to avoid offering dummies and encourage your baby to suckle form the breast.
  • Make sure you are eating and drinking plenty and having a well balanced diet whilst you are feeding your baby. Also try to rest and sleep well in between feeding your baby.
  • It may also help for you to express milk from your breasts either manually or by using a breast pump, your health visitor will be able to advise you about this
