Once I have expressed my breast milk how do I store it?.
A
You can store milk either in the
fridge for no longer than 24 hours, or freezer for longer. In both cases, be
sure to use a sterilized airtight container to store it in. Always remember
to:
- You can give your expressed milk
directly to your baby, but if you want it to give to your baby later you should
refrigerate the expressed milk immediately. You can then store the milk in
the fridge for up to 24 hours so label the container with the time and date
so you don’t get mixed up.
- Make sure the expressed milk is
kept in the main part of the fridge at the back and not in the fridge door,
as the temperature is more constant at the back.
- Expressed milk can also be frozen
and kept in the freezer for up to 3 months so do label your container with
the date to be safe.
- Expressed milk that has been refrigerated
should be gently warmed to body temperature by standing the container it has
been stored in, in hot water before feeding it to your baby. Do not use a
microwave and remember warmed milk cannot be reused or refrozen. Also throw
any unused milk that your baby does not drink away.
- When the milk has been stored
it does separate, don’t worry the milk is still fine to use, just gently
shake it to mix before you feed your baby.
