A This is called an umbilical granuloma and sometimes occurs in tissue
that is in the process of healing. It is very common in newborn babies.
Clean the area with soap and warm water at nappy changing time and
keep dry. Roll back the nappy and expose the area to the air if possible.
If the area is red, is always moist and has an odor it may be infected and
it may be advisable to contact your health visitor or Doctor for advice
about treatment. Recent research on the treatment of umbilical granuloma has found that salt applied to the granuloma is a very effective cure and can be treated at home in the following way. Expose the centre of the umbilicus by pressing on the area around the umbilicus. If you are worried about doing this your self, contact your Health Visitor and she will demonstrate how to do It, apply a pinch of table salt or cooking salt on to the granuloma. Wait for 30 minutes, and then clean the area with warm water It is important not to use too much salt because it will damage the normal skin around the umbilicus. Continue the treatment twice a day for three-seven days
After a few days you may notice that the granuloma has changed colour, has reduced in size or it may have dried up completely
Consult your Doctor or Health Visitor for advice about further treatment if the granuloma has not responded to the salt treatment.
