My baby is 9 months old - Can I give my baby cows milk to drink?.

A

  • Cow’s milk or shop bought full-fat milk isn't suitable as a drink until your baby is a year old. This is because it doesn't contain the right balance of iron and vitamins and minerals to meet all your baby's developmental needs. You can however add cow’s milk to your cooking, but do not rely on it as a sole drink until your child is one year old.
  • Semi-skimmed milk isn't suitable as a drink for children under two. But you can introduce it from two years old, if your child is a good eater and has a varied diet including dairy products and cheeses as these contain fats and calcium that are still needed for development of healthy bones and teeth.
  • Skimmed or 1% milk isn't suitable for children under five years old as children need calories and fats in their diet to help with development. Skimmed milk also contains only very small amounts of vitamins A and D, all of which children need. Vitamin A important for good vision and healthy skin. And Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium.
