I have just started weaning my 6 month old can I give my baby juice and squashes now?.

A Remember even though your baby is starting solid food you should continue to give your baby breast milk or formula milk as their main drink. Especially at first, as the small amounts of solids you baby will eat would not contain enough nutrients to help your baby develop properly. As a guideline a 6 month old baby should be having around 1 pint of formula or breast milk a day to supplement weaning. Giving your baby juices and other drinks will also reduce his or her appetite for milk and solids at this stage. This is something you don’t want when you are trying to introduce new foods and tastes. Squashes also contain a lot of sugars, as do fruit juices. Additionally, they can cause tooth decay if taken in large doses and especially from a bottle.

You may want to introduce water and juices at a later stage of weaning, but for now it may be best to concentrate on solids and your baby’s usual milk feeds. If you are struggling to get your baby to drink around a pint of milk a day remember you can add some of their formula or breast milk into weaning foods. Adding formula or breast milk to cereals purees of vegetables and fruits may even enhance the taste for your baby making the weaning process easier.
