What foods should I avoid giving my baby?.

A If your baby is 6 months old they can have a wide range of foods, which is good news. Your baby has a wealth of new and exciting tastes to gradually try. These include wheat-based foods and other foods containing gluten (e.g. bread, rusks, and breakfast cereals), meat, eggs, citrus fruits and vegetables, fish and shellfish

  • However do avoid Shark, swordfish and marlin because these fish contain relatively high levels of mercury, which may affect your Childs nervous system.
  • Cook eggs fully so the yolk and white and hard and not runny
  • Cook shellfish well as raw shellfish can cause food poisoning and hepatitis A.
  • Nuts and seeds should not be given to children under 5 due to the risks of choking and allergy
  • Try to avoid giving junk food like crisps sweets and biscuits as they contain high quantities of salt, fats and sugars. Try to give healthy snacks instead like chopped fruit and vegetables as it helps form good eating habits and provides a more balanced diet for your child.
  • Soft and unpasteurised cheeses are not suitable for children under 2 as babies immunity can not cope with the bacteria they contain. These foods can make you baby very ill.
  • Do not give drinks like tea or coffee. The tannin in tea interferes with iron absorption, and the caffeine in tea and coffee is not recommended for children.
