My newborn baby has what the doctor called a Mongolian blue spot on his back will it go away?.

A Mongolian blue spots are birthmarks that usually appear after birth or sometimes a few days or weeks after. The medical name is congenital dermal melanocytosis. Congenital: meaning present at birth. They are often a bluish or bluish-gray colour and are thought to be a result of the over production of melanin, which protects the skin from the sun and UV rays. This type of birthmark is more common in babies of black, Asian, Mediterranean, Hispanic and mixed race descent. These birthmarks can often be confused with bruises, but they are not painful for your baby. I suspect your child's birthmark was noticed by the baby Doctor (pediatrician) when they did the newborn baby check. Your baby's next review will be at 8 weeks so make sure the presence of your babies birthmark is noticed by your health visitor and recorded in your child health record. Most health professionals are aware of Mongolian blue spots but documenting the site and type of birthmark, hopefully will prevent any embarrassment for you. This type of birthmark usually fades gradually over time and usually disappear by the time your baby is one year old.
